Literacy, Reading and Spelling
Literacy, Reading and Spelling
Speech pathologists play a crucial role in supporting literacy, reading, and spelling in children. We offer assessments, interventions, and preventative measures.
We often work closely with teachers, parents, and other professionals to create a supportive learning environment. We may:
- Consult: Offer strategies and resources to teachers and parents to support your child’s learning at home and in school.
- Advocate: Promote effective literacy practices and support for children with language and literacy difficulties.
- Collaborate: Work in correspondence with your child’s other health professionals such as an Occupational Therapist to best support their literacy goals.

Assessment
We can assess your child’s language and literacy skills to identify any difficulties. This includes evaluating phonological awareness, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, writing and spelling.
Intervention
Based on the assessment, we can provide targeted interventions to address your child’s specific areas of need. This can involve:
- Phonological Awareness: Helping your child recognise and manipulate sounds in words, learn letter-sound correspondence or other phonics skills which are foundational for reading and spelling.
- Vocabulary Development: Expanding your child’s word knowledge to improve reading comprehension and written texts.
- Reading Skills: Teaching your child to decode words, improving reading fluency, and enhance comprehension.
- Writing Skills: Using approaches to improve spelling, as well as supporting sentence structure, text structure, and organising ideas for writing.
Our Speech Pathologists are trained in the Sounds-Write phonics intervention program. This is an evidence-based, systematic, synthetic phonics approach which supports students from kindergarten to become proficient readers and spellers through a structured and explicit method.
Prevention
We can focus on preventing future literacy concerns by fostering early language development and emergent literacy skills in younger children. This includes activities like:
- Reading Aloud: Supporting you to read with your child collaboratively to build a love for reading and provide strategies during reading activities to improve language skills.
- Language-Rich Activities: Providing strategies to engage your child in conversations, play, and other activities that promote appropriate language development.
- Pre-Literacy: Supporting early phonics and phonological awareness skills such as sound-letter knowledge, segmenting and blending, to strengthen pre-requisite skills for reading and writing.
By addressing both the underlying language skills and the specific literacy skills, we can help children become more confident and successful readers and writers.
