Articulation and Lisp Therapy

What Is Articulation and Lisp Therapy?

Pronunciation difficulties in children are common and are part of normal development. When these difficulties persist beyond a certain age, though, they can point to a speech sound disorder.

Speech sound disorders generally fall into a few types. Articulation disorders involve physically producing sounds, where a child might substitute, omit, add or distort sounds, for example saying “wabbit” instead of “rabbit”. Phonological disorders occur when a child has trouble with the sound system and rules of their language, using patterns of errors such as replacing sounds made at the back of the mouth (like “k” and “g”) with sounds made at the front (like “t” and “d”). Motor-speech disorders affect the coordination behind speech, you can read more here.

Articulation and lisp therapy targets the specific sounds and patterns your child finds difficult, so their speech becomes clearer over time.

AREAS WE SUPPORT

Child receiving a vision test from a healthcare professional

Articulation Difficulties

We help children who have trouble physically producing sounds, whether they substitute, omit, add or distort them. Therapy builds the accurate sounds your child is missing so words come out clearly.
Teacher helping a child learn the days of the week on a classroom chart

Phonological Difficulties

We support children who use patterns of sound errors, such as replacing back sounds like “k” and “g” with front sounds like “t” and “d”. We retrain these patterns so the whole sound system falls into place.
Lisps and Motor-Speech Difficulties

Lisps and Motor-Speech Difficulties

We work on lisps and other distortions, such as an unusual “s” or “z”, and support motor-speech difficulties where the coordination behind speech needs targeted help. For complex motor-speech needs, see our CAS Clinic.

HOW YOUR THERAPY JOURNEY WORKS

Initial Speech Assessment

Initial Assessment

Your first session is a speech sound assessment. We listen to how your child produces sounds, identify specific errors and patterns, talk through your concerns, and pinpoint what to target.
A Clear Therapy Plan

A Clear Therapy Plan

From the assessment we build a plan targeting your child’s specific sounds and patterns. We choose evidence-based techniques and set clear goals, so therapy focuses on sounds that matter most.
Ongoing Therapy and Home Practice

Sessions and Home Practice

Regular sessions, in clinic or by videocall, use play and repetition to practise target sounds. Home activities build sounds into daily speech, and we review progress as your child improves.

It is a pleasure to leave a review for Lucy. Lucy has worked with our daughter over a period of around 12 months. We have seen huge improvements with our daughter's lisp, confidence, and pronounication of tricky speech clusters. From my perspective as a parent, the warm, engaging, and nurturing clinic, and Lucy's bubbly and positive personality has meant the world to us. Even when our daughter has really struggled, Lucy always took a strength based approach and made us feel safe and that everything would be 'okay'. My daughter adores Lucy because she made all learning fun and playful. We have worked with many allied health professionals over the years, and no one has come close to how caring, kind, and skilled Lucy is. Thank you. <3

Samantha is very knowledgeable, professional, kind, patient and very supportive. I’ve been seeing her for past 2 years for my son who’s been diagnosed with CAS (childhood apraxia of speech) and she’s outstanding speech therapist. She’s so dedicated and is able to get so much from my son as he loves her sessions so much. You would not find a better and more supportive speech pathologist. Highly recommend her.

I am so thankful to have been told about it Sam when the clinic first opened. Sam is very passionate about what she does and takes her business seriously. She is always open to communication with parents about different approaches and has also been a support to me personally as a parent. Thank you, Sam, and happy first birthday!

Samantha has been incredibly supportive of both my girls who are 2 and 3 who had a speech delay and concerns around development. She is honest, helpful, kind, warm and has great skills particularly with kids that have behavioural concerns. I would highly recommend her services. She has a world of knowledge of multidisciplinary teams and is able to suggest best steps to access support and which support would benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for my child to mispronounce some sounds?
Yes. Some sound errors are a normal part of development, and many sort themselves out as children grow. The concern is when errors persist beyond the age most children have mastered a sound, or when your child is hard to understand.
Some lisps are developmental and fade on their own, while others persist. If a lisp is still present as your child gets older, or it is affecting how well they are understood, an assessment will tell you whether therapy is needed.
An articulation difficulty is about physically making a sound, for example a distorted “s”. A phonological difficulty is about patterns, where a child consistently swaps groups of sounds. Therapy looks a little different for each, which is why we assess first.
There are several possible factors, including developmental delays, hearing issues such as frequent ear infections, physical differences like a cleft palate, and neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy. Assessment helps us understand what is behind your child’s difficulty.
Yes. Speech sound therapy works well by videocall, with a parent supporting younger children on screen. You will need a quiet space and a reliable internet connection.
