STARTING STRONG: SPEECHIE TIPS FOR A GREAT TERM 2
Can you believe we’re already kicking off Term 2? After a busy Term 1 and a (hopefully) restful break, it’s a great time to hit “refresh” and set the tone for the months ahead.
As speech pathologists working alongside students every day, we wanted to share a few quick tips to help make this transition smooth and positive — for you and your child!

✅ Check In on Goals
Have a chat with your child about what they’re working on — both in class and in therapy (if they attend).
Celebrate any wins, no matter how small!
Ask teachers or therapists if any goals need adjusting now that your child has had some time to settle in.
Checking in keeps everyone feeling motivated and clear about the path ahead.
🕰 Rebuild Routines
After school holidays, routines can feel a bit… well, loose.
Now’s the time to re-establish things like:
Regular reading times
Homework habits
Speech practice (if your child has speech tasks)
Little steps make a huge difference when they’re part of everyday life.
🗣 Keep Communication Simple and Clear
The first few weeks back can be overwhelming! Help your child by:
Giving clear, simple instructions.
Allowing extra time for them to process and respond.
Modeling calm and patient communication.
If your child uses visuals, AAC devices, or other supports, double-check they’re ready and working.
🤝 Stay in the Loop
Teachers, teacher’s aides, and therapists love hearing from you!
Touch base early in the term to:
Share anything you noticed over the break
Ask how your child is settling back into the classroom
Find out any simple ways you can help at home
It truly takes a village — and we’re all on the same team.
🎲 Make it Fun!
Remember, learning doesn’t just happen at school desks.
You can boost communication skills in so many easy (and fun!) ways:
Play card games or board games
Read books together
Cook meals and talk through the steps
Make up silly stories on the drive/walk to school
The more natural and playful it feels, the more your child will engage!
Here’s to a fresh, fun, and fabulous Term 2!
As always, if you ever have questions about your child’s speech or language skills, feel free to reach out — we’re here to support you!
